Public have their say on £1.6 million investment in Wallington10.15.18pm GMT Fri 26th Mar 2010 A recent survey of residents, traders and school pupils has seen over 1,000 responses as people have their on Sutton Council's £1.6 million project to transform travel in the town. The project is looking into how the Council can encourage more people to walk, cycle or use public transport with responses showing that people who use Wallington value its convenience and the variety of services on offer. But high traffic levels, street clutter, inadequate crossing facilities and lack of cycle facilities were identified out as the most unpopular aspects of the town. The project will help improve the town centre to tackle these issues with suggestions including better pavements, improved pedestrian crossings and extra cycle parking. Colin Hall, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Transport said: "Hearing from our residents is absolutely vital and this feedback will help us focus the work going on in Wallington. Across the borough we've had great success with our Smarter Travel Sutton project and with residents help, we aim to build on this success to make Wallington a place where it is easier and more convenient to walk, cycle or take the bus or train." Plans are also now being developed to invest in a similar project in Worcester Park which will help inform future work planned over the next five to ten years across Carshalton, North Cheam; Hackbridge; Rosehill, Cheam and Belmont.
