Spring brings garden waste collections back

12.00.00am GMT Tue 16th Mar 2010

April sees the return of the free garden waste collection service that is popular with so many Sutton residents.

The fortnightly collections, which will take place on householders' usual recycling day, resume on Monday 5 April with each household able to put two reusable plastic sacks.

The bags are easy to get hold of - whether from any of the borough's nine libraries, the Civic Offices in Sutton or the Denmark Road office in Carshalton and will be picked up free of charge

The reusable sacks can be filled with twigs, sticks, leaves, grass, hedge clippings, dead plants and branches up to 20cms (8 inches) in diameter.

Residents can also buy single-use biodegradable sacks for £1 each for any extra garden waste from the same council venues.

The waste is converted into compost, which people can collect from the council's Reuse and Recycling Centre in Kimpton Park Way, Sutton to spread on their own gardens.

Cllr Colin Hall, Executive Member for Environment on Sutton Council, said:

"I urge residents to make sure they pick up their sacks in time for the return of the free collection service.

"It is all part of our commitment to provide effective and easily accessible facilities so that everyone can recycle as much as possible and ensure Sutton remains one of the greenest, most sustainable boroughs in the UK."

The garden waste collection service will run until Friday 17 December.
