    • Export Event for Businesses
Businesses in Sutton are being encouraged to find out about the opportunities and support available to local businesses which are looking to expand their businesses through exporting. Sutton Chamber of Commerce, PPMA and UK Trade & Investments (UKTI) will be hosting the event in Parliament on June 11th, which will provide information about how local companies can benefit from winning business overseas and diversifying their customer base. Local MP, Tom Brake, who organised the event, said, 'Sutton is home to an excellent business community and I want make sure that local businesses benefit from the export opportunities that are available'. Chris Buxton, CEO of the PPMA group said, "Globalisation has long ceased to be jargon used by business consultants - it is now a business reality. Any company not recognising this fact is, at best, missing a huge opportunity and at worst, may find themselves going out of business. Exploring the export option should now be on every business agenda." The event will take place between 9am and 1pm on Friday June 11th at the Palace of Westminster. • Public Response Phenomenal - Brake
Public Response Phenomenal - Brake Local MP Tom Brake has described the public response to the recommendation to close vital health services at St Helier Hospital as 'Phenomenal'. More than 2000 local residents have now signed Tom Brake's petition calling on the Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley, to intervene and force the Better Services Better Value review, which made the recommendation, to be abandoned. Tom Brake said, 'the review is completely flawed. You simply cannot remove vital healthcare on the back of a review which uses incomplete data, ignores the importance of travel times and is based upon the existence of alternative health services that don't exist'. 'But this is more than just about the details of a review - it is about people's lives. I have been touched by the moving stories residents have sent me about how health services at St Helier have been available when they needed them most. As a father whose two children were born at St Helier, these are stories I find easy to relate to.' • Nomination for Local Restaurant
The Blue Bengal in Carshalton has been nominated to take part in Tiffin Cup, a competition run by the Tiffin Club of MPs, to find the best South East Asian Restaurant in the country. Local MP, Tom Brake nominated the Blue Bengal after asking local residents to name their favourite Asian restaurant on Facebook. A restaurant from every region will be shortlisted and invited to participate in the Grand Final cook-off event held in the House of Commons, which will be judged by MPs and guest celebrities, with the proceeds going to a selected charity. The Blue Bengal made it to the Grand Final in 2010 as the representative for Greater London. Commenting on the nomination, Tom Brake said, "There are many great restaurants in Carshalton and Wallington but clearly the Blue Bengal is a big hit with local residents. I only hope that they can improve on the 2010 result and win the Tiffin Cup". 'H' and the team at the Blue Bengal, said, "It is a great honour to be nominated for the competition. We work hard to provide great tasting food and an excellent atmosphere - I only hope the judges enjoy it as much as the locals do." • MP visits tennis charity's free initiative
UK tennis charity Tennis For Free (TFF) welcomed Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake to their free coaching scheme in Sutton on Sunday. The charity launched its free coaching scheme at Rosehill Park in Sutton in October 2011 in partnership with Sutton Council, Surrey LTA, Sutton Housing Partnership and supported by California Raisins. In this time a vibrant, fun community has been created with tennis, as well as health and fitness, at the core. Mr Brake participated in the session under the guidance of TFF's LTA qualified tennis coaches. Speaking of his experience during the visit Tom Brake said: "It was great to see the Rosehill Park tennis courts full of enthusiastic young and older people this Sunday. "Tennis for Free is doing great work introducing adults and children to the game free of charge. Tennis is beneficial for health and fitness but also helps build communities. "This is a great scheme which I am really pleased to see being enjoyed by the residents of Sutton and I really encourage everyone to go to Rosehill and give it a go." Claire Hamilton, Surrey Tennis Development Manager at the LTA, said: "This is an example of successful partnership between the LTA, TFF and Rosehill to deliver community tennis. "We're delighted that our funding has helped to provide local people with free tennis as part of a wider, affordable tennis programme." Andrew Taylor Chief Executive of Sutton Housing Partnership said: "The Tennis for Free coaching programme in Sutton is something we are very proud to support. "It's a great opportunity for our residents and their families to try a new sport, which they may not have a chance to do if it wasn't for these Sunday sessions." He added: "Tennis for Free is helping to bring communities together and I would urge anyone who is thinking of going along to a session to give it a try." Paul Jessop, CEO of Tennis For Free, said: "We are delighted to have Tom Brake MP visit our free coaching site at Rosehill Park so he can see the benefits it delivers to the local community. "Hearing Mr Brake's endorsement for what we do for local communities, especially in terms of health and fitness, will hopefully help us to expand the free coaching scheme throughout the country." • Strong Support for St Helier Hospital
More than a 1000 people have signed a petition calling on the Secretary of State for Health to abandon the Better Services Better Value review that has recommended the closure of the A&E department and the maternity unit at St Helier Hospital. Local MP, Tom Brake, has described the process that led to the recommendation as 'flawed' and has called on the Secretary of State for Health to meet with him and local Councillors urgently to discuss the concerns of local residents and health professionals. Tom Brake said, 'This recommendation has been made without the necessary data, without sufficient and accurate reference to travel times and is based upon expanded community health services that are not yet in place. The public response has been staggering and it is clear that local people overwhelmingly want vital healthcare services to remain at St Helier Hospital'. • Brake - 'let's unite to save health services'
Local MP, Tom Brake, has called on the local community to 'unite' to demonstrate public support for key medical services to remain at St Helier Hospital. Describing the recommendation to close the A&E and maternity unit at St Helier Hospital as 'desperately disappointing', Tom Brake pointed at increased demand for A+E and maternity services and improved patient satisfaction as reasons for services to remain on the St Helier site. Tom Brake said, 'for more than a decade, our local community has campaigned to save St Helier Hospital when it has faced various threats. Now it is vital that our community joins together again to make sure that the Better Services Better Value team listen to local people who want to keep our A&E and maternity units at St Helier'. • Better Services Better Value Review - The future of A&E and maternity services at St Helier
I wanted to take this opportunity to write to you about reports you may have seen in the media over the past few days in relation to the future of St Helier Hospital's A&E department and maternity unit. The Better Services Better Value (BSBV) review has recommended changing the shape of future health services in South West London. This review was carried out by doctors, nurses and other medical professionals with the aim of finding ways to help the local NHS cope with growing demand and improve health services in four hospitals across the area: St George's in Tooting, Kingston, Croydon University Hospital and St Helier here in Sutton. The review recommends the closure of one A&E department and one maternity unit in South West London, establishing a new world class planned care centre for elective surgery and increasing services within the community. For more detailed information about the BSBV review and the proposed changes see here - http://tombrake.co.uk/en/page/better-services-better-value-review-the-future-of-a-e-and-maternity-services Most recently a BSBV panel (made up of members of the public, doctors, nurses and local authorities) met to score and rank options. The panel decided that the best option was for the A&E and maternity unit at St Helier Hospital to close and for St Helier to become a centre of excellence for elective surgery. It is important to remember that this is not the final decision yet, but just one input to a lengthy process about the future of local services. Mr Michael Bailey, senior hospital surgeon and Acute Medical Director for BSBV, has said that no decisions will be made without the views of local people being considered in full. I want to hold him to this promise and I am launching a petition to represent the views of local people who want to keep the A&E and maternity units at St Helier. You can sign the petition here - http://tombrake.co.uk/en/petition/save-st-helier-hospital-s-a-e-department-and-maternity-unit. Despite the reasons put forward by the BSBV review for the changes, I believe that our A&E and maternity unit at St Helier play a vital role in our community. The demand for A&E has been increasing in recent years and there is a spurt in the number of births locally. For more than a decade, our local community has campaigned to save St Helier hospital when it has faced various threats. Now it is vital that our community joins together again to make sure that the BSBV listen to local people who want to keep our A&E and maternity units at St Helier. • TOM BRAKE MP PRODUCES HOT AIR TO SUPPORT CYSTIC FIBROSIS WEEK
Carshalton and Wallington MP, Tom Brake, had his lung function tested to see how the result compared with someone with Cystic Fibrosis to highlight the devastating impact of the disease for Cystic Fibrosis Week 2012. The event, held on 25 April organised by the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, indicated to parliamentarians first hand how Cystic Fibrosis damages the lungs. The average lung capacity for an adult with Cystic Fibrosis is just 65.1% compared to someone without Cystic Fibrosis that would achieve results of 80% or more. Tom achieved 108% on his spirometry test, which is well above average. Cystic Fibrosis is a progressive disease with the average age of death for a person with CF of around 29 years old. Despite this, because of advances in treatment and access to clinical expertise, many people with CF are living longer than ever before. Tom Brake MP said: "I was delighted to attend the event to show my support for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Having my lung function tested has shown me how much more effort people with CF have to make just to take a breath. I can see how arduous the burden of treatment is to try to stop lung function from declining. It highlighted to me just what a battle it is living with this condition that claims two young lives a week. I hope as many people as possible take part in an event in their area during CF Week to help to raise awareness and fundraise for research and support for CF". Cystic Fibrosis is one of the UK's most common inherited conditions, affecting over 9,000 babies, children and adults. CF is caused by a faulty gene that causes the lungs, digestive system and pancreas clogging them with a thick sticky mucus. Claire Francis, Policy and Public Affairs Manager at the CF Trust said: "Cystic Fibrosis is a disease that is difficult to comprehend as people with the condition can look healthy and active. Through our events for Cystic Fibrosis Week we hope to show politicians how the disease effects the body and how important daily treatment and expert care is to help people live longer lives and improve their quality of life. "People with Cystic Fibrosis don't get a second chance once the damage is done. Providing the best quality of care is crucial to maintaining lung function. We know that services are suffering because of cut backs in posts vital to Cystic Fibrosis care and cut backs in beds suitable for accommodating people with Cystic Fibrosis when they need inpatient treatment." The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is aware of worrying trends that amount to real-time cuts to Cystic Fibrosis services. Patient care is being compromised because posts in vital disciplines - specialist nursing, physiotherapy and dietetics - are being disestablished, downgraded, left vacant or used to backfill general vacancies. We need the Government to ensure that Cystic Fibrosis services are adequately resourced and extra capacity, including beds suitable for accommodating people with Cystic Fibrosis, are provided. More information about Cystic Fibrosis Week, which runs from 29 April to 5 May and events going on can be found at www.cfweek.org.uk Published and promoted by Tom Brake MP, Kennedy House, 5 Nightingale Road, Carshalton, Surrey SM5 2DN Printed (hosted) by Prater Raines Ltd, 98 Sandgate High Street, Folkestone CT20 3BY
    • The Special One Cup - Charity Football Match
Carshalton resident, Aaron Hearne, has pledged to 'raise as much money and awareness as possible for the NSPCC' in memory of his younger brother, Liam, who sadly took his own life in 2010 and, whilst the reasons for Liam's death may never be known, Aaron now wants to support those who dedicate their lives to helping children and young adults overcome their adversities. Over the coming months, Aaron will be organising a series of fund-raising events to try and reach his target of £10,000 before 7th October, the first of which is a charity football match at Carshalton Athletic Football Club on May 12th from 1.15 to 4.30. More than 500 people have bought tickets to the event in advance which will include a live performance from local musician Justin D, dance acts from Destiny Stage School, a raffle which includes signed football memorabilia, hotel stays and a Games consol and the Main Event a footballing 'master class' from AFC Liam and Homies United. Commenting on the event, Aaron said: " Not only do I aim to raise money for the NSPCCs ChildLine service through organising this football match and other future events but to also raise as much awareness as possible amongst children and young adults in the local community about the fantastic support and help that ChildLine can offer to them. Local MP, Tom Brake, who will be attending the charity football match, said: "The way Aaron is creating something positive out of something so tragic is an inspiration to us all. I am looking forward to the charity football match and to supporting Aaron in raising awareness of the support services available in our local community." • Protection of Freedoms Act landmark achievement in fight for civil liberties - Tom Brake
A landmark move to roll back Labour's surveillance state has today become law. The Protection of Freedoms Act will: stop councils snooping end the storage of DNA of innocent people reduce the bureaucracy of CRB checks end 28-day detention stop schools deciding on their own to take fingerprints of children Make stalking a criminal offence End wheel clamping on private land Delete historical convictions for men who have had consensual gay sex with someone who was over 16 Liberal Democrats have long campaigned for this piece of legislation, proposing a "Freedom Bill" more than four years ago when Nick Clegg was the Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesman. Commenting, Tom Brake said: "This is a milestone in the fight to claw back our civil liberties. Under the Labour government, our civil liberties were steadily eroded by increasingly over-bearing security state. "Liberal Democrats have done the right thing by ending these shameful practices with the Protection of Freedoms Act. It builds on the scrapping of the ID card scheme and the destruction of the National Identity Register and is a leap forward in bringing Labour's surveillance state to an end. "This Act will stop councils from putting CCTV cameras everywhere to snoop on residents without good reason, ending Labour's laws that allowed them to spy on us whenever they wanted. "The Freedoms Act will also help boost to volunteering in Sutton by ending overburdening requirements to get a CRB check. The new regime will be more targeted and sensible, for example by allowing CRB checks to be transferred between jobs to cut down on bureaucracy." A group of local young people have re-launched the campaign for a night bus between Croydon and Sutton. Daniel Dunican is spearheading the campaign that is calling on all Mayoral candidates to make the 154 a 24 hour bus service. Three years ago hundreds of young people protested against the decision to axe the old N213 night bus and more than 5000 people joined the subsequent Facebook campaign. Daniel Dunican said, 'It is clear that TfL will not bring back the N213 but by simply extending the 154 to operate 24 hours a day, the next London Mayor can provide a night bus linking Morden, Sutton, Carshalton, Wallington and Croydon. If Ken and Boris want our votes, they need to listen to the needs of young people." Brian Paddick, Liberal Democrat candidate for Mayor, has already come out to pledge his support for the campaign saying that the removal of the night bus has had implications for individual safety. Jenny Jones, the Green Party candidate has also come out in support of the campaign. Local MP, Tom Brake, said, 'It is great to see young people getting involved in politics and I do hope whoever is the next Mayor brings back the night bus and puts a greater emphasis upon transport and transport safety in outer London.' Recently released statistics show that in Sutton 670 young people started an apprenticeship between August 2011 and January 2012, a rise of 70% on the 2010/11 figures of the same period. The Apprenticeship scheme had already accommodated for 1210 young people in 2010/11, so this is hugely encouraging news for the outlook of the local economy, both in the short and long term, as young people can now contribute more effectively. Linked to this, The Regional Growth Fund has also performed well. In the South East, there has been a huge £113 million investment since the scheme began, resulting directly in the creation of an estimated 5 936 jobs, as well as indirectly creating 19 498 jobs. Tom Brake, local MP for Carshalton and Wallington said: "The Liberal Democrats are determined to tackle youth unemployment and get our economy back on track. For us to be successful, people need the skills and experience to take advantage of new jobs being created in our area. That is why apprenticeships are a huge part of the Liberal Democrat drive for a fairer and more balanced economy. Apprenticeships make companies more productive and give young people the experience and skills they need." • Extra £15 million for Pupil Places in Sutton
The Coalition Government has recently announced that Sutton will get an additional £15 033 608 this year to relieve the pressure on school places. This is part of an additional £600m of capital spending in England this year, which is for investment in things such as extra classrooms and more teaching assistants. This comes on top of the £800m already set aside to address the shortage in pupil places announced for 2012-13, bringing the total investment to well over £1 billion. Commenting, Tom Brake, local MP for Carshalton and Wallington said: "This is obviously a very welcome boost in local funding for education; the extra money will mean that many children will now be able to get into their school of first choice, as school facilities expand and improve. This is an investment in the future, and hopefully through these additional funds, Sutton's schools, which are already amongst the best in the country, will further improve, and be able to provide more places for local children. I know this will be a real help, and I, working alongside Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, will do all I can to make sure that the money made available is invested properly, where it is most needed." Commenting further, Liberal Democrat Minister for Children, Sarah Teather said: "This means extra money for more classrooms, so that more of our children can get the school place they deserve. On a national scale, it will be a real step towards ensuring we give every child a fair start in life, regardless of their background or where they live."
