As President of The Princess Royal Trust for Carers, to which Sutton Carers Centre has been affiliated since 1992, HRH had the opportunity to meet local carers in Sutton who were thrilled to meet her in person.
Rachael MacLeod Stevens, Chief Executive of Sutton Carers Centre, says: 'It was wonderful to receive such an honourable guest and the staff, volunteers and carers enjoyed meeting Her Royal Highness very much. We hope that her visit will raise awareness about our presence in the community and that it will help people to identify themselves as carers so that they can access our support.'
Carers receive support from the Centre through their various services which include information, advice and advocacy, regular social and recreational activities, practical support such as training, as well as counselling, complementary therapies and peer support groups. Last year, in partnership with Sutton CAB, the Advice Service identified potential unclaimed family benefits amounting to £750,000.
Increased funding from the London Borough of Sutton has enabled development of an evening and weekend service for Mental Health Carers unable to access support during normal office hours.
Additionally, Sutton Carers Centre has recently been awarded £1m from the Big Lottery Fund as part of a partnership that will help identify and support more Young Carers. This project is in partnership with Carers Support Merton, Riverside Community Association, South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust, and St Mark's Family Centre.
