Noisy neighbour changes tune after prosecution

January 20, 2012 1:58 AM

A noisy neighbour has been forced to face the music after a raucous party shattered the peace of a Sutton street.

Simone White-Yule was served a noise abatement notice after residents of Rectory Lane, Wallington, complained about music blasting from her house during a summer party. After this was ignored, Sutton Council gave her a fixed penalty of £100, which went unpaid.

Ms White-Yule was brought before Croydon Magistrates Court, where she pleaded guilty to failing to comply with the terms of the Noise Abatement Notice.

She was made to pay out a total of £415, made up from £300 for the offence, a contribution towards prosecution costs of £100 and a victims surcharge of £15.

Cllr Colin Hall, Sutton Council's Executive Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: "This goes to show that there's no need to feel powerless against noisy neighbours.

"Ms White-Yule now has to pay over £400 which could have been saved by simply turning the music down. This should serve as a warning to inconsiderate neighbours - if you cause a nuisance then you will be made to pay."

Anyone wishing to report noise nuisance in Sutton should call the council on 020 8770 5070 or through the report it section at www.sutton.gov.uk
