Help Sutton celebrate World Book Night

January 20, 2012 1:52 AM

Sutton's libraries are encouraging local literature fans to sign up to help celebrate the written word on World Book Night.

The nationwide event, which will return for its second year on 23 April, will see 20,000 people give away 24 copies of their favourite novel to help people turn over a new page in their relationship with reading. The books can be chosen from a list of 25 of the nation's best-loved titles, including Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveller's Wife, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's Good Omens and The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. A further 520,000 books, making one million in total, will be donated directly to libraries and prisons. To make it easier to take part, Sutton libraries will be running events on Saturday 21 April.

Last year Sutton Central Library created a space for book givers to band together and hand out hundreds of titles to the evening's visitors. Now, they are interested in hearing from anyone who registers as a giver with WBN and would be interested in taking part this year.

Cathy McDonough, Head of Libraries and Heritage Service at Sutton Council, said: "A love of reading is a wonderful gift, and handing out a copy of a great novel has the potential to spark a passion for the written word. Handing out several different titles in one place worked really well last year, so it would be great to see it happen again.

"Last year's World Book Night was a great success, and this year looks set to be the same. Sutton libraries will be hosting another evening of fun events, and there's still time to register as a book giver if you'd like to get more involved."

The first world book night in 2011 saw 20,000 volunteers in the UK give one million books away to light or non readers during a night-long series of bookish events up and down the country. Sutton Central Library held an evening of storytelling, quizzes, author talks and children's events and created a space for WBN givers to hand out their books.

This year the giveaway goes global, with events and handouts planned on the same day in Ireland and the USA. Sutton is expanding its line-up to run in libraries across the borough, with events planned in Sutton Central Library and giving spaces in other branches.

To sign up to be a book giver, you must be aged 16 or over, resident in the UK and able to collect and transport 24 copies of your book from your local bookshop or library. To make sure that the books help to spread a love of reading, they should be given away to light or non readers on 23 April. Givers will be chosen based on how, where and why they want to give the books away, so be as inventive as you can! To register, go to www.worldbooknight.org and sign up before 1 February.
