Every year on 27 January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, services take place across Europe to remember those murdered in the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides, including those in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur.
The theme of this year's event is 'Speak Up, Speak Out' to encourage people to challenge injustice and hatred and help to create a safer, better future. There will be speeches from Mayor of Sutton Councillor Gerry Jerome, Holocaust survivor Marcel Ladenheim and Reverend Meir Lev, Minister of Sutton and District Synagogue.
Residents can view an exhibition with information and photography about the genocides on Holocaust Memorial Day and over the weekend in Sutton Library's Europa Gallery.
Cllr Simon Wales, Executive Member for Communities, Transport and the Voluntary Sector on Sutton Council, said: "Holocaust Memorial Day is a valuable opportunity to remember those who died or had their lives shattered by genocide, and reflect upon the lessons from the past.
"This year's theme encourages us all to play our part in stamping out prejudice, hatred and fear. Repression and violence continues to take place around the world every day, and we all have a duty to speak out against it in whatever way we can."
