Sutton Liberal Democrats celebrating success in the General and Local Elections
Sutton Liberal Democrats have achieved huge success in both the council elections and those for the borough's two MPs, held jointly on Thursday 6th May 2010.
With 43 councillors out of a total of 54, the Liberal Democrat Group have increased their number of seats by 12, with councillors in all but one of the borough's 18 wards. Not only did the Liberal Democrats take control of the former Conservative Group Leader's ward, Carshalton Central, they also took seats in the previously all Conservative wards of Cheam, Sutton South, and Carshalton South and Clockhouse.
This followed on from the success of Paul Burstow and Tom Brake in the early hours of Friday morning, retaining their seats in Sutton and Cheam and Carshalton and Wallington, as two of the hardest working MPs in London.
Cllr Sean Brennan, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group said:
"The results in Sutton show that local residents trust Liberal Democrats to deliver a greener, safer and fairer borough.
"We want to thank all those who recognised our record of fighting locally and in Parliament for the needs and interests of our communities, and voted for us to be re-elected.
"We are determined to meet the challenges ahead and work for the benefit of our residents as we have for the last 24 years."
Tom Brake MP added:
"This was a stunning victory for the Lib Dems in Sutton. Enormous trust has been placed in the Borough's Lib Dem MPs and Councillors. We will not let people down"
Paul Burstow MP added:
We immensely grateful to the residents of our area who voted to ensure that the priorities of fair taxes, a fair chance for every child, a strong rebalanced economy that delivers sustainable jobs and political reform are at the top of the agenda both locally and nationally.
