Liberal Democrats at Sutton Council have passed new powers for the council to challenge any plans to open lap dancing clubs in the borough.
There are currently no lap dancing clubs in Sutton but anyone wanting to open a club in the borough in the future will now have to specifically apply to the council for a sex establishment licence.
The powers, which come under the Government's Policing and Crime Act 2010, mean all lap dancing clubs are classed as sex establishments rather than as licensed premises.
The council will now be able to reject such applications if it can show the venue would encourage crime, disorder and public nuisance or endanger public safety or the protection of children.
For the first time, under this law, residents will be able to complain if lap dancing bars try to open near schools or religious buildings.
The powers also make it much tougher for existing licensed premises to put on adult shows.
Cllr Sue Stears, Chair of the licensing committee said: "We know that many residents don't want a lap dancing club in their neighbourhood and now we can and will respond to the concerns of local people.
"Having the power to turn down applications for clubs in these areas will give residents a voice and ensure it is listened to."
