Sutton's Liberal Democrat Council is set to receive £56m for improving school buildings after its successful application to join the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.
After bidding to the government agency running the programme for improvements to schools such as Wandle Valley, The Limes College, Carshalton Boys Sports College, Carshalton High School for Girls and the Hospital and Tuition Service, the Government announced on 8th March Sutton was one of only six local authorities to be accepted in the latest round.
The Council now needs to draw up detailed plans to further improve our provision which will need agreement with the government. Changes to the five schools are expected to be completed by 2015.
Liberal Democrat spokesperson on education Tony Brett Young said: "This is fantastic news for the young people at these schools as this programme ahs the potential to secure investment of £56million.
"After months of hard work and negotiation I am delighted that we have made it into the next round to help us secure the funding needed for some of schools.
"It will help us rebuild or expand these schools which will transform the quality of education we will be able to offer for some of our most vulnerable pupils."
