Yesterday's announcement by Government Minister John Healey that councils will be allowed to keep their rents and the proceeds from the sale of homes was hailed as a great success for the joint campaign between Sutton's tenants and leading Liberal Democrat campaigners.
Together with the local tenants, Sutton's local MPs Tom Brake and Paul Bursow and Council Leader Sean Brennan have been pressing the Government to scrap the system which currently sees the Government using Sutton tenants' rents to pay for improvements to housing and housing debt in other parts of the country.
Over £10m a year of Sutton tenants' rent was taken out of Sutton through what is known as a negative housing subsidy.
A delegation of Sutton tenants and supporters, including the Council Leader Sean Brennan, presented a petition to Downing Street in March last year to demand a fairer deal for council tenants.
Cllr Brennan said: "This is great news and shows how we can work together to demand change at a national level.
"The current system was wholly unfair to Sutton tenants and I am delighted that our demand for action has finally been heard.
