Sutton Liberal Democrats hailed the success of the long campaign to secure the future of St Helier hospital and quality health services for local residents.
After years of lobbying local health bosses, regional health bodies and the Department of Health, the joint campaign by Unison, Sutton Liberal Democrats and the two local MPs has finally secured the necessary funding to redevelop the hospital site.
The Government has now pledged £219m of funding for the redevelopment after Sutton Liberal Democrat led Council worked hard to ensure the outline planning application was approved without unnecessary delay.
Cllr Sean Brennan, Liberal Democrat Leader of Sutton Council, said:
"This long-awaited announcement will finally give Sutton residents the modern, high standard health facilities they need.
"We are absolutely delighted that the Government has agreed the funding and we will be pressing our partners in the health service to start construction as quickly as possible."
