Crime is going down in Sutton - and that's a fact.

January 13, 2010 4:26 PM

Crime is fallingDon't believe the Tories scare stories - total crime figures actually fell in the borough by 3% over the past year.

In fact, crime has been falling twice as fast as the London average. Meanwhile in Tory-run Croydon, Harrow and Hammersmith & Fulham they have all seen overall increases in crime.

Liberal Democrats in Sutton have been working closely with the police Neighbourhood Teams to crack down on crime and help you feel safer. And police doorstep surveys have found a very high level of satisfaction.

Fear of crime is often higher than actual crime. But responsible politicians should give you the facts, not misrepresent them in an effort to scare you.

The Conservatives are wrong to cynically play on these fears. In Sutton, a good working partnership between local people, the police and the Lib Dem Council is delivering lower crime. In many Tory boroughs the opposite is true.

A recent glossy Tory leaflet - printed with cash given by non-dom Lord Ashcroft - used selective data for individual crimes to suggest that crime was rising in Sutton.

But the reality is that in the 12 months from November 2008 to November 2009, vehicle theft was down( 5%), robbery was down (3%), sexual assaults are down (20%), and race and homophobic crime are also down.

And although burglary showed a slight increase during this recession (3.6% rise), that is far less than the double-digit increases for burglary in Tory-controlled Barnet (up 12%), Bromley (up 13%), Havering (up 13%), Hillingdon (up 19%), and Croydon (up 21%).
